Journeying into a New Universe for Education

The vision for the Pocket Scientist is defined by what this site represents and what the person who enters this site is looking for.  In this busy world, a person needs all the resources they can get and located in one place.  This site will act as a hub for connecting a visitor to resources, opportunities, educational programs, and news relevant to the Science discipline. According to the Southeast Partners in Flight Web Tech Committee, Field Guide to Web Technology (2010), instead of static websites, “ new tools such as web feeds and dynamic websites have opened up automated avenues to the finding and summarizing of information.” (p4).

This site will be using, “Eduteching”, a process by which education is presented through technology. Eduteching will provide students with an education that is accessible , able to be manipulated, collaborative and can be customized by the learner.  It will also improve critical thinking, provide evaluation, expand experiences and be innovative, dynamic and encourage lifelong learning.

In order to  support a multiple of learning styles, the courses that are developed, along with the types of resources that are provided, will utilize visual, auditory and hands-on aspects. The use of webcasts, videos, podcasts, vodcasts and virtual worlds will enhance the educational experience that a visitor will encounter when connected to this site.

This site will also have areas where visitors will be able to find data and assist in helping to incorporate the data into the various problems being researched. This will allow visitors to collaborate with other visitors and with the organizations or educators that will be a part of providing the research material. In this way the visitor will be utilizing their critical thinking skills to determine if information that is placed on the site is both useful and truthful.

Visitors will be able to customize by choosing which portions of the site that they will participate in as well as what topics are being discussed through social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter as well as by adding their own input through, comments, blogs or wikis. Through the use of various surveys and other evaluation techniques visitors will be able to evaluate material being presented as well as be evaluated by others on material that they incorporate on the site.

Throughout the process of becoming immersed in the site a visitor will be expanding their educational knowledge and experiences. Visitors will  have the opportunity to enroll in courses that will help them to understand a scientific principle, theory or concept.  Finally, the site will constantly be in a state of change with ever increasing ways to participate, discover new knowledge and add to the content that is being presented. Through participating in the site a visitor can continue to return and find something to study which will encourage a process of lifelong learning.

The ultimate vision is to see Pocket Scientist as a “one-stop shop” for all your Science Educational needs and a brand new Universe for you to discover.
